“I'm still coping with my trauma, but coping by trying to find different ways to heal it rather than hide it."- Clemantine Wamariya(Author, Speaker and Human Rights Activist)
Dear Friend,How are you? Do not think of this question as rhetorical. This is your conscience speaking. Really, how is your mental health? Before the pandemic, statistics from the World Health Organisation (WHO) as of 2019, showed that Nigeria, the seventh-largest country in the world, could have up to 50 million people suffering from mental health issues. The organisation further posits that Nigeria records Africa’s highest caseload of depression and ranks 15th globally, in the frequency of suicide.
However, despite these alarming figures, there are only eight federal neuropsychiatric hospitals situated in Borno, Ogun, Sokoto, Lagos, Enugu, Edo, Cross-River and Kaduna states as well as three other state-run neuropsychiatric hospitals in Anambra, Ondo and Rivers.Today, a myriad of factors constitutes probable triggers for mental instability and trauma among Nigerians, particularly the younger generation.Indeed, it is okay not to be okay, but not for too long without help to heal and bounce back! Many have recovered, while others are in the healing process. If we can speak up and seek professional help, there will be no place for stigma in our society.Permit me to recommend the October edition of the #ThursdayTalks where we addressed healing from traumatic ordeals specific to our situation as Nigerians.
