The Pressure is Getting Werser

Friday, September 23, 2022

“Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted; the indifference of those who should have known better; the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most; that has made it possible for evil to triumph.”

Haile Selassie

(Former Emperor of Ethiopia)

Dear Active Citizen,The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the order by the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN) on Monday,  September 19th, that asked its members to call off the seven-month-long strike.

The union promised to appeal the judgement. This is a classic case of when two elephants fight, the grass suffers. Our students need to go back to school NOW!

Is This Playing?

Our President’s wife, Aisha Buhari, on Tuesday, September 20th, took to her Facebook page to congratulate her daughter-in-law on her graduation from a university in the United Kingdom. Nigerians, however, criticized her for the update, saying it was insensitive to the current plight of Nigerian students and shows why her husband doesn't care that Nigerian students are at home!In fact, we believe this is just like adding salt to an injury!

Nigeria's Generational Debt

Nigeria’s debt profile rose by about N4 trillion in the past five months totaling N45.25 trillion from N41.60 trillion as of March 2022.

Official data reviewed  on Wednesday, September 21st, indicated that the government raised about N3.34 trillion through its regular issuance of domestic debt instruments between April and August. The depreciation of the naira also impacted the external debt stock. We are incurring debt at this rate and election campaigning hasn't started! What do we do?

Finally, Justice for Kolade Johnson

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has sentenced Olalekan Ogunyemi, a dismissed police officer, to life imprisonment for killing Kolade Johnson.Johnson was shot during a raid by police officers at Onipetesi in Lagos, while watching an English premiership match between Tottenham and Manchester United on March 31, 2019.The incident sparked outrage on social media, after which the police authorities identified Ogunyemi Olalekan, a police inspector, and Godwin Orji, a sergeant, as the officers involved in the shooting. Following an orderly trial, Olalekan was dismissed from the force after he was found guilty, while Orji was acquitted. This will finally give the family closure and goes to show that nobody is above the law!

Nigeria Needs to Learn from China

A former Justice Minister, Fu Zhenghua has been handed a suspended death sentence that will be commuted to life imprisonment after two years, with no possibility of parole, according to state media on Thursday.Fu, who served as Justice Minister between March 2018 and April 2020 was accused of “taking advantage” of his position between 2005 and 2021, including accepting bribes totalling more than 117 million yuan (about $16.76 million) and “bending the law for personal gains.”Maybe Nigeria needs to learn a thing or two from China. Apparently, China can give us more than just money!
