11 Years of Inspiring Action!
Monday, March 22, 2021
"The longing, the ardent desire for a world free of discrimination, oppression or tyranny of any kind places the burden heavily on one's shoulders to work and keep working to bring about that longed-for world."– 'Remi Sonaiya (Nigerian Educationist & Politician)
Dear Active Citizen,
Just talking has never been enough, so 11 years ago, we took ONE ACTION: kick-started the process to inspire Nigerians to talk less & act more! We activated our Office of the Citizen and invited you to do likewise. As ONE PERSON, each Nigerian can Sọ̀rọ̀ Sókè and contribute to the process of meaningful change, ONE action at a time. We celebrate every Nigerian that has taken ONE ACTION to transition from being passive citizens to occupying their Office of the Citizen as active citizens. As we celebrate 11 years of inspiring action, ONE PERSON at a time, consider donating as a birthday present! Are you occupying your Office of the Citizen?Join the ‘ONE PERSON’ campaign by simply recording a short video where you talk about how, as ‘ONE PERSON’, you’re leaving your FOOTPRINTS in your community. Upload the video on any of your social platforms with the hashtags #OnePerson | #EiEat11 | #EiEFootprintsGod bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria!
As we celebrate 11 years of inspiring action, our Executive Director,
'Yemi Adamolekun
will sit with
Maupe Ogun-Yusuf
(Co-host, Sunrise Daily on Channels Television)
to share her #OnePerson journey of steering EiE Nigeria for over 10 years.
Thursday, March 25th,
5:30pm.
to join the conversation.
Active Citizens said No To Enugu Life Pension Bill
You see that phrase,
"We die here"?
Nigerian politicians should have it crested on their chests.
The Enugu State House of Assembly had earlier
introduced a bill that sought to provide life pensions for ex-governors and their deputies
but this was met with online and offline resistance by active citizens.
The
Assembly bowed to the demands of citizens
and announced, through
Speaker
Edward Ubosi that the bill had been stepped down for further deliberations.
This is what happens when you
Sọ̀rọ̀ Sókè
...and...can we shock you?
The protest was led by active citizens like you. Imagine the power you wield!
Nigeria's Shrinking Workforce
Country hard...country hard...but our leaders can't relate. Why? They are feeding fat amidst the groans of the poor masses. Hmm.
In case you didn't know, the latest report from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) shows that
Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose from 27.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2020 to 33.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2020.
We do not mean to sound like the harbingers of bad news neither do we want to come off as prophets of doom but, this is BAD. The higher the unemployment rate, the higher the crime rate. Simple!
This month, March is Women's History Month.
Congratulations to Samia Suluhu who was sworn in as the President of Tanzania on Friday, March 19, 2021.
She became president following the death of President John Magufuli. She will lead until 2025, completing the 5-year term he began in 2020.
She's the first female president in East Africa. We celebrate all African women taking centre stage in African politics and the international community.
We want more!
Bandits abducted students and teachers from UBE Primary School in Rama, a village in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
The abduction occurred while pupils were trooping into the school around 9am on
Monday, March 15th.
Next month will be 7 years since the hashtag #BringBackOurGirls rocked the world.
With
112 #ChibokGirls still missing,
these recurring kidnappings are indicators of a failed government. Our tired is already tired. Our government needs to take swift actions to stop this.
Have a great week! The EiE Nigeria Team
