Why We Take a Mental Health Day Every Month!
“Self-care is not selfish; it's essential for our mental well-being.”
Lami Phillips
(Nigerian singer)
Dear Active Citizen,
As you may know, today marks World Mental Health Day, and this year's theme is "It's Time to Prioritize Mental Health in the Workplace." This global call to action couldn't align more perfectly with what we've been doing here at EiE Nigeria, especially given the challenging times we're facing as a nation.
As we navigate through a period of economic uncertainty, with rising costs of living affecting us all, it's more crucial than ever to prioritize our mental well-being. We've been observing Mental Health Day monthly since 2022 by giving our team a day off to focus on their well-being.
That's right! Once a month, we close our office doors, power down our laptops, and take a collective breath.
Why Monthly, You Ask?
In a country where the pressures of daily life are intensifying, mental health isn't a once-a-year concern. It's an everyday priority that deserves regular attention. By observing Mental Health Day monthly, we're making a statement: Your mental well-being matters, and it matters all year round, especially when times are tough.
Here's what some of our team members have to say:
We're proud of this initiative, and we believe it's a practice worth spreading, especially in these trying times. It doesn't have to be a full day off (though we highly recommend it!). It could be flexible work hours, meditation breaks, or team-building activities focused on mental health. The important thing is to take that first step, acknowledging the added stressors our current economic situation brings.
Stay well, stay positive, and remember: It's okay to take a break. In fact, at EiE Nigeria, we insist on it!
