Meet Sarah Kuponiyi - Fighting Period Poverty with Purpose

“One person can and does make a difference.”

Dear Active Citizen,
Last month, we celebrated Dr. Victor Ugo, whose powerful journey from battling depression to founding Nigeria’s largest youth-led mental health organisation, Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI), inspired us all. This May, we continue our celebration of everyday Nigerians making extraordinary impact by shining the spotlight on someone whose work is changing the lives of girls across Nigeria.

Meet Sarah Kuponiyi, a public health professional and social entrepreneur whose personal experience with period poverty became the driving force behind her advocacy. Growing up, Sarah often couldn’t afford sanitary pads, a challenge that meant missing school and facing the shame that so many girls experience in silence. Instead of turning away from this reality, she chose to take action.
Sarah founded Alora Reusable Pads, a social enterprise producing eco-friendly menstrual products that help girls stay in school and manage their periods with dignity. Through Alora, more than 20,000 reusable pads have been distributed, directly reducing school absenteeism while also promoting menstrual health awareness. Beyond product distribution, Sarah leads menstrual health education efforts, empowering girls and women to understand their bodies and advocate for their wellbeing.

Her work addresses more than hygiene, it tackles inequality, educational disruption, and the silence around menstruation that holds too many girls back. Sarah is not only creating access to practical solutions but also shifting cultural norms and restoring confidence to a generation.
