Failed Recall Attempt: What It Means & What’s Next

“The problem with Nigeria is not the lack of institutions but the challenge has always been that the existing institutions have under-performed or have been hijacked, domesticated and used for certain group interests.”
Femi Falana, SAN

Dear Active Citizen,
INEC has rejected the petition to recall Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central), citing non-compliance with Section 69(a) of Nigeria's Constitution. Join us this Saturday, April 5, at 8pm for "Citizens' Guide to the Recall Process" to understand why the petition failed and what it means for democratic accountability.

Aisha never thought her voice mattered. Like many young Nigerians, she was frustrated by bad roads, poor waste management, and unresponsive leaders. But that changed when she stumbled upon a video from the Office of the Citizen (OOTC). Curious, she attended an EiE town hall and learned how to engage her leaders. With guidance from the OOTC Help Desk, she pushed for better waste management in her neighborhood. Weeks later, waste bins were provided, and collection improved.
That small victory sparked a movement. Aisha inspired others to take action, proving that citizens can drive change. EiE has empowered thousands like her, but millions still need this knowledge.

Lynched in Uromi
Did you hear what happened in Uromi, Edo State? Sixteen travelers were killed by a mob. The victims, primarily Hausa hunters, were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Eid al-Fitr celebrations. They were intercepted by local vigilantes who discovered locally made weapons in their vehicle, leading to suspicions of criminal activity. Instead of involving law enforcement, the vigilantes alerted a mob, which attacked and killed the travelers.
Our thoughts are with their families right now. How does anyone process losing someone they love like that? 💔
This isn't new in Nigeria, though. Remember the Aluu Four in 2012? Four university students from UniPort were beaten and burned to death because someone falsely accused them of stealing. And in 2022, Deborah Yakubu was stoned and burned alive in Sokoto over accusations of blasphemy.
These are just some of the cases that made headlines. So many others happen that we never even hear about.

So why does this keep happening? People have lost faith in our justice system. When you don't believe reporting a crime will lead to justice, taking matters into your own hands might feel like the only option. But let's be real—mob justice isn't justice at all. It's murder!
The Edo State Government and security agencies have responded to the Uromi killings, but we need more than just statements and a few arrests. We need a complete investigation where every person involved is held accountable. Beyond that, we need a justice system that works quickly and fairly.
As faulty and compromised as our judiciary is, we must continue to push the system to improve—because the alternative is deadly.

Our Petition Against Akpabio & Imasuen
We have formally petitioned the Legal Practitioners’ Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) over serious allegations against Senators Godswill Akpabio and Neda Bernards Imasuen. Senator Akpabio is facing sexual harassment claims from Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, while Senator Imasuen, who was disbarred for fraud in the U.S., continues to hold a powerful position in the Senate.
Have a great weekend!
