Important Info on the Aug 1st Peaceful Protest

“The security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government.”

Section 14(b)(2), 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended)

Dear Active Citizen,

We've all been feeling the heat lately, right? From the rising costs at the market to the indifference of the government to our plight, it seems like there's a lot on our minds. That's why we wanted to chat with you about something important: your right to peacefully protest.

What's Going On?

You must have heard about the protest planned for tomorrow Thursday, August 1st nationwide. It's set to be a powerful example of our democracy in action. This protest is our way of speaking up to the government about issues that affect us all. It's a chance for citizens to come together and make their voices heard peacefully.

What Will People Be Protesting About?

Amongst other pressing concerns, protesters will be demanding:

  1. Immediate action to reduce the cost of living, including lowering fuel prices, electricity tariffs, and import taxes.

  2. A clear plan to address food insecurity through importation, subsidized credits, and logistics support.

  3. Protection of farmers' rights, restoration of stolen land, and subsidies for farm inputs.

  4. Justice for #EndSARS victims, including the release of protesters, publication of judicial panel reports, and implementation of recommendations.

What You Can Do

  1. Join a peaceful protest. It's your right! There are multiple locations across the country and you can find some here.

  2. Spread the word and invite others to join.

  3. Share concerns and demands on social media using #EndBadGovernance and #OfficeOfTheCitizen.

  4. Find out who represents you and let them know what you think. Their contact details are available at shineyoureye.org.

We stand in solidarity with Nigerians as they exercise their right to peaceful protest and demand a better tomorrow.

PS: While the right to protest is a fundamental principle of democratic nations, it must be exercised peacefully and responsibly without violating the rights of others. We join other CSOs to urge all protest organizers, participants, and law enforcement agencies to prioritize safety and the rule of law.
