June 12 – Democracy Day

EiE Nigeria Weekly Update Saturday, June 9, 2018

“June 12th represented more than just a person. June 12th represented an idea that everybody in this country can live together as one, that we can treat ourselves as Nigerians without regard to tribe, ethnic origin, religion and all those things that they have been used to divide us…"- Ayo Obe(Human Rights Activist and Lawyer)

June 12: Democracy Day

“Only real democracy can move our nation forward towards progress and earn her the respect she deserves from the international community."-MKO Abiola

Obafemi Awolowo and MKO Abiola are the only non-presidents to be honoured with Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (GCFR), Nigeria’s highest national honour. Both were presidential candidates. Chief Awolowo lost the August 11, 1979 presidential election on a technicality. Abiola won the June 12, 1993 presidential elections but the election was annulled by former President, General Ibrahim Babangida. Its been 20 years since the death of General Sani Abacha. His regime jailed MKO Abiola & his loot is still been recovered till date!Almost 20 years after the death of MKO Abiola (died July 7, 1998), President Buhari declared June 12 as Democracy Day.Better late than never!
