Solidarity Visit to Amnesty International

EiE joined other civil society organizations (CSOs) for a solidarity visit to Amnesty international (AI) on Wedneday, March 29th. The procession started from the Unity Fountain to the AI Office in Maitama, Abuja. Protesters under the aegis of Global Peace & Life Rescue Initiative had earlier stormed AI office on Monday, March 20th giving it a 24–hour ultimatum to leave the country. This was later changed to a ‘5–day occupy Amnesty International protest’. The protesters claimed that AI was deliberately indicting the Nigerian Army of unprofessional practice in Nigeria, especially, North-East.

Thousands Displaced in Otodo Gbame by Lagos State Government

Inhabitants of the Otodo Gbame area in Lagos have been affected by the unlawful demolition exercise by agents of the Lagos state government. Despite a court order to the Lagos state government to stay action on the demolition exercise, the agents of the Lagos State government including military personnel went ahead with the demolition rendering about 4,700 inhabitants homeless.In the course of the week, EiE and other civil society organisations (CSOs) met to discuss strategies to engage the government and also call the attention of international bodies to the issue.

Man Jailed for Insulting Governor on Facebook

A social media activist, Gambo Saeed was jailed for nine months by Katsina Chief Magistrate, Abdu Ladan for insulting and defaming the character of Katsina State Governor, Aminu Masari on Facebook.  He was charged under Sections 399, 392 and 114 of the Penal Code.Also, several bloggers and social media activists have been arrested and charged under Section 24 of the Cybercrime Act. EiE, PIN & MRA have been in court since 2016 to repeal the Act. Our next court date is April 26th.

Class Action: Unmetered Customers & Estimated Billing

Following the failure of the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies to meter their customers and halt estimated billing, a Lagos-based consumer rights lawyer, Olumide Babalola, has filed a class action suit at the Lagos State High Court on behalf of the unmetered customers.The suit comes up for mention on Thursday, May 4, 2017.Click to join the class action lawsuit orSend your Name, LGA/LCDA, Last Estimated Bill and DISCO Account Number to 09023555335
