International Women’s Day – Be Bold For Change

Women in Lagos came out in large numbers for a peaceful march with the theme ‘Women Move Now’ to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th. The march was coordinated by Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) & Women Arise for Change Initiative with EiE and 21 other organizations as supporting partners. The plan was to engage Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode on the 12-point Gender Pact which he signed when he was campaigning. Not only was he not around to meet the marchers, he did not delegate the responsibility to anyone. Lagos State has historically marked International Women's Day, so this was a very unwelcome development.Nevertheless, the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly delegated a representative who received the marchers.

Mr President is Back

President Muhammadu Buhari returned to Abuja this morning via Kaduna. He met with senior government officials at the State House where he said he would be returning to the UK very soon to follow up on his health issues.Mr President was looking frailer than when he left the country on January 19th (49 days ago) on vacation & medical check-up. While wishing him a quick recovery, we hope Mr President will prioritize his health and ensure that there is no leadership crisis in the country.

Auditor-General Uncovers N2bn Fraud in National Assembly

The Auditor-General’s report has exposed a N2billion fraud in the National Assembly expenditure. This comes at a time when EiE, Budgit and other civil society organisations (CSOs) have been mounting pressure on the National Assembly to make public the details of their 2016 budget. The opacity of the National Assembly budget since 2010 has helped to conceal a lot of fraud in the National Assembly.
