National Assembly Needs N54.49 billion NOT N125 billion

From the #OpenNASS Datathon hosted by Budgit & EiE, active citizens proposed the reduction of the 2017 National Assembly budget from the approved N125 billion to N54.49 billion. Whilst preparing the leaner and more effective budget, the participants noticed the repeated allocations made by the Senate, House of Representatives, National Institute of Legislative Studies, National Assembly Service Commission and the Public Accounts Committee (Senate and House of Representatives) for purchase of stationery and computer consumables, training, travel, purchase of motor vehicle, maintenance of the National Assembly buildings and other items.

#OpenNASS: National Issues & Electronic Voting

The Senate on Thursday, June 1st used voice voting to confirm 15 Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) out of 27 names. One of the 5 demands of #OpenNASS is using electronic voting.On the same day, there was confusion in the House of Representatives on the use of voice voting to accept or reject the South East Commission Development Bill.Why don’t our representatives use electronic voting to make decisions on these key national issues?Over 9,000 Nigerians have signed the petition demanding for an #OpenNASS. Hunger Hits Abuja IDPs Camp

According to a report in Daily Trust most children at the New Kuchingoro IDP Camp, Abuja were poorly fed and often sick. Some have lost their lives because most parents there could not afford taking them to a health facility and there is none in the camp. Thousands of children are facing starvation in Nigeria. Many IDPs in the country are suffering with little or no protection, security, food or access to potable water.Support the work of our partners, Adopt-A-Camp to provide much needed aid.

Class Action: Unmetered Customers & Estimated Billing

Following the failure of the Eko and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Companies to meter their customers and halt estimated billing, a Lagos-based consumer rights lawyer, Olumide Babalola, has filed a class action suit at the Lagos State High Court on behalf of unmetered customers.

The suit comes up for hearing on Friday, July 14, 2017.
