“The greatest danger to Nigeria today is the inaction of those who should serve and save it.”
Olusegun Obasanjo
(Former President of Nigeria)
Dear {{First name|Active Citizen}},
Former President Muhammadu Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a UK hospital - the same country where he repeatedly sought medical treatment during his 8 years in office. We extend our condolences to his family and loved ones. May they find peace and comfort in this time of loss.
But beyond the grief, Nigerians are left with a sobering truth: He never fixed the system he always fled.

In 2020, Buhari famously said that Nigerians can’t keep going abroad for medical care. Yet, he spent much of his presidency abroad for medical reasons and in the end, he died there, far from the system he governed.
His successor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu is already repeating the same pattern - jetting out for “routine checks” while millions of ordinary Nigerians are left with under-equipped hospitals, unpaid doctors, and preventable deaths. Sadly, this is now standard practice among Nigerian politicians. They preach patriotism. But when it matters, they run from the very systems they’ve failed to build.

So What Now?
We begin by asking hard questions of our leaders and ourselves. We must demand transparency about how public funds are spent and refuse to normalise a culture where the elite fly out for healthcare while the rest are left to pray for survival. It’s not enough to vote; we must vote for people who stay and fix, not flee. And above all, we must use our voices - online and offline - to demand better and keep the pressure on. Silence has never built a country. Accountability has.
One way to start is by knowing your elected representatives and public officials, tracking their actions, and holding them accountable. Visit www.shineyoureye.org to take that first step.
