Here's Your 2023 Impact Story
Dear Enabler,
I'm writing to thank you for your generous financial support over the years. It's partners like you that make our work at EiE possible.
In the midst of challenges, your support enabled us to make significant strides toward our mission of promoting good governance and public accountability in Nigeria through active citizenship. Your donations allow us to respond quickly to current issues and take on projects that are not funded by institutional donors.
Enabler, ahead of our 2023 Impact Report, we wanted to share some of our many wins from last year!
MissinginNG
We continued to engage citizens online to help families reunite and get closure on their missing persons by amplifying their search through social media and the MissingInNG website www.governi.ng.
In 2023, we recorded over 200 cases of people who fell victim to mass kidnappings and published four quarterly infographic contents to amplify these cases.
Good News and #OnePerson Campaign
Last year, we doubled up on highlighting good news content from Nigerians in Nigeria and around the world. We also revived our #OnePerson Campaign to spotlight activities of individuals doing unique things in/for their communities in Nigeria.
Enabler, look out for our updates as we plan to host all our #OnePerson honorees in June, and we’re counting on your presence and support as usual!
ShineYourEye
In 2023, we commenced reviewing data of elected officials on the website, which curates contact information of election officials. It has been updated with new information, due to deaths, court judgements, and party defections of some elected officials. This is ongoing as we are compiling information on all the elected candidates nationwide. www.shineyoureye.org
Election Tribunals Coverage
Your support played a crucial role in our extensive coverage of election tribunals, reaching thousands and demystifying judicial processes for citizens.
Journey to Public Office Series
We also worked on highlighting the important milestones in the journey of selected public office seekers like Tonye Cole, APC - Rivers State gubernatorial candidate; Olubankole Wellington (Banky W), PDP - Eti-Osa House of Representative candidate; and Abba Kabir Yusuff, NNPP - Kano State gubernatorial candidate.
Religious Elections Toolkit
As part of our #RSVP campaign, we produced the eighth volume of this resource to empower religious leaders, enabling them to guide their congregations through the complexities of the 2023 polls.
While we've produced this resource since 2018, this is the first time we have gotten written feedback, which was very exciting!
“Our brother in Christ, thank you for this very Christian educational and enlightened Election Toolkit that you sent to us in Kogi as religious leaders. I have gone through it and it is very good and by God’s grace, we shall be forwarding it to all our 21 LGAs Co-ordinators to reach all our religious leaders and churches in the State. We are most grateful for your good motives and we welcome more of it in the near future for the body of Christ to grow well and grounded in elections and other related matters. God richly bless you - Amen.”
Kogi Chapter, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)
Student Union Leaders Fellowship
In partnership with Civic Hive, we facilitated the training of 30 student leaders across the Student Union Governments (SUGs) in the south-west and south-east regions equipping them with the know-how and resources they need to take part in meaningful civic life, effectively advocate for their rights and interests, and make a positive difference in their communities. In 2024, we are looking to scale this training to accommodate more young Nigerians across the different regions in the country!
Model United Nations Conference
Thanks to your support, we inspired over 130 students into action during the Covenant University International Model United Nations Conference, fostering a sense of civic responsibility.
Media Reach
i) #ThursdayTalks: We garnered nearly 11,000 active listeners in our monthly series on Twitter to discuss issues pertaining to governance and public accountability in Nigeria, in partnership with BudgIT and The Cable.
ii) WAYS TV: A weekly segment on “Office of the Citizen” that we hope to expand to other TV stations this year.
iii) Infographics: Published 33 in BusinessDay & ThisDay and then shared online, making information more accessible with pictures.
Office of the Citizen Passports
With your support, we printed and distributed 450+ copies to educate citizens on their rights and responsibilities, and reached countless more through WAYS TV segments and the published infographics. We have now made them available for sale in our merchandise store.
Enabler, regardless of the highs and lows of the 2023 general elections, your support was instrumental to drive tangible impact of our #RSVP campaign last year which cut across four cardinal actions - Register to vote|Select credible candidates|Vote NOT fight & Protect your vote on election day and during the 4-year election cycle.
Our Complaint Portal for the registration process served as a direct channel for over 2,800 grievances, amplifying citizen voices and bolstering transparency in the electoral process. Additionally, we set up a call centre in Lagos during the elections to provide citizens a platform to report election-related matters, serving as a first-point of call for 200+ citizens ensuring swift and effective resolutions of issues.
Through engaging debates, dialogues, and over 100 radio programs in five states, we directly impacted local communities, fostering informed and empowered citizens. By facilitating constructive conversations and providing platforms for diverse perspectives for candidates vying for executive and legislative offices, we empowered voters to make informed decisions during elections, ultimately strengthening democratic processes at the grassroots level.
For more detailed information on our election related activities, please see our #RSVP 2023 Report.
As you can see, EiE was at the nexus of voter education, civic education & participation and good governance in Nigeria this past year thanks to support from partners like you.
As we embark on a new year, we kindly ask that you consider continuing your invaluable support.
Thanks again for everything you do to advance citizen engagement and good governance in Nigeria. We’re grateful to have you as part of the team and you’ll be hearing from me soon!
